Modestus
Martinus Nobels, more easily known as "Des", came to Canada
from the Netherlands many years ago and has made his life on the North
Coast for the past thirty years. Des and Wendy have enjoyed living
in Dodge Cove longer than most of us, raising a wonderful family in
the process.
Whether out on the ocean as a commercial fisherman on his vessel the
"Vonnie Dee", or in his studio crafting jewelry, he exercises
the same painstaking precision and attention to detail and isn't happy
with a job merely done satisfactorily. It has to glitter with perfection
(forgive the pun).
Des
Nobels
Des
usually expresses his Celtic and Germanic roots in his works, using
bronze, silver or gold in conjunction with both precious and semiprecious
stones and he never uses machines or castings, resulting in works
which are ONE-OF-A-KIND, as well as entirely HANDMADE. Instead of
using machine methods, then, Des uses techniques such as piercing,
chasing and repoussé, a method of delicate hammering from the
reverse side of a piece.
While
his primary and preferred medium is metal, Des has also worked with
stone, a medium he would like to explore further as time goes on.
